Satisfy your hunger in the middle of the night

Midnight Snack is a free horror simulation video game wherein you’re a kid all alone at night. Developed by Bruno Bricchi, this 3D first-person indie game is an atmospheric psychological horror title that's pretty short and easy to finish.

Similar to Fears to Fathom: Home Alone, Midnight Snack features a young child who’s been left alone at home as a protagonist. With its grainy retro-style graphics and loud-sounding jumpscares, it’s pretty creepy to play—even in broad daylight. However, it’s very short and doesn’t have much gameplay aside from interacting with objects and moving.

Just a nibble for the night

In Midnight Snack, you play as a 12-year-old girl who’s home alone. She’s gotten into the habit of waking up in the middle of the night and getting a snack, so your goal is to guide her downstairs to fulfill her needs before heading back to bed. This quiet night is different, however, and soon enough, your nighttime escapades take a turn for the worse.

The game’s controls are standard. The WASD keys are for moving around. The left Shift key will activate sprinting if you hold it down while pressing a movement key. While the E key is for interaction and the left mouse button is for extra interactive options. Due to the short length and linear progression of the game, however, there aren’t many moments to make the most of these controls.

There’s only one ending available here. Thus, you’re not really given a lot of leeway to control the character in order to expand your playthrough. In fact, some sections won’t let you progress through another area if you don’t do what the character plans to do. The atmosphere is pretty good, though, and the dark grainy graphics do well to make it creepy.

Could be improved with more

All in all, Midnight Snack is an interesting little indie game if you want a short horror experience about being a little kid. While the execution is pretty short and straightforward—and can feel lacking in terms of gameplay variety—the atmosphere and length are enough for a short bite into the horror genre, especially when you want a first-person perspective.
